Ravindra Jadeja’s ODI Career in Doubt: Veteran India all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja could be nearing the end of his ODI career, with the national selectors reportedly preparing to back Axar Patel as the team’s preferred spin-bowling all-rounder ahead of the upcoming ODI World Cup. According to a report by The Times of India, Axar has moved ahead of Jadeja in India’s white-ball plans.
Axar strengthened his case in the opening ODI against England at Birmingham, producing a match-winning all-round display. The left-arm spinner claimed career-best ODI figures of 4/62 before scoring an unbeaten half-century, helping India chase down the target with six wickets to spare. His efforts earned him the Player of the Match award.

India’s recent team selections also indicate a shift in strategy. Throughout the ongoing England tour and several overseas assignments, the management has preferred using spin-bowling all-rounders Axar Patel and Washington Sundar instead of fielding a specialist spinner. As a result, wrist-spinner Kuldeep Yadav has remained out of the playing XI.
The report states that the selectors are hesitant to bring Jadeja back as India’s frontline white-ball spinner. With limited spin-bowling all-round options available and concerns over Kuldeep’s batting ability, the team management is prioritizing players who can provide greater balance by contributing significantly with both bat and ball.
A BCCI source quoted by The Times of India said that Jadeja’s selection before the 2025 Champions Trophy was influenced by the expectation of spin-friendly conditions in Dubai. However, the source added that Jadeja’s white-ball bowling has not been as effective in recent years, while his power-hitting has declined compared to his peak during the 2019 ODI World Cup.
Although Axar had limited opportunities in South Africa, scoring just eight runs and taking one wicket in three appearances, the team management continues to view him as the better long-term option. Jadeja, meanwhile, struggled during India’s ODI series against New Zealand earlier this year, managing only 43 runs in three matches at an average of 14.33 and a strike rate of 66.15, as India suffered a 2-1 series defeat.
With the ODI World Cup approaching, India’s selection strategy appears to be shifting toward younger, more versatile all-rounders, leaving Jadeja’s future in the 50-over format increasingly uncertain.
