According to police, a medical/dental student from Karnataka filed a complaint at Mogra Police Station on June 23. She alleged that she had been in a relationship with Porel for around three to three-and-a-half years and that he had promised to marry her.

Police have registered a case under several provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including Section 69, which deals with sexual intercourse obtained through a false promise of marriage. Provisions of the Information Technology Act have also been invoked.

The Calcutta High Court had earlier directed the police to arrest Porel and seize his electronic devices as part of the investigation. The order came amid concerns that intimate material could potentially be circulated.
